Mbarara City Council authorities and Police are investigating Kisenyi ward councilor in Kakoba division, Hon. Muzamil Ssekajja who is also former municipal works secretary after suspected stolen government property including a street light, pavers and others were recovered from his home in Nyamityobora.
The property believed to be part of the property procured under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development-USMID project were recovered in an operation involving Police, Mbarara Resident District Commissioner (RDC) with city council officials yesterday Wednesday, 22nd July, 2020.
According to the Rwizi Regional Police spokesperson Samson Kasasira, a whistle blower tipped off the RDC who instructed them to follow up the matter and they secured a search warrant from court to search the councilor’s home.
Kasasira says they have preferred charges of abuse of office, uttering false documents, and possession of government stores against the councilor though he has not been arrested.
Ssekajja, however, denies stealing the property found in his premises with the street light already installed saying he bought them from Abubaker Technical Services that was contracted to install street lights in Mbarara as well as blaming the malicious allegations to politics since he is aspiring as City Councilor for Kakoba and Nyamityobora wards.
When contacted, Mbarara City Deputy Town Clerk, Richard Mugisha said that he has not received any complaint from either their employees or public about missing property but investigations into the matter are underway.
