Strange banana disease worries Rwampara and western Uganda people at large.
Banana farmers in Rwampara district and western Uganda as a whole have expressed worry over a strange banana disease outbreak in their area that has threatened food security and income.
Believing that it is not Banana Xanthomonas Wilt, or banana bacterial wilt or enset wilt, farmers say a banana changes its color before drying and the affected banana can neither be cooked nor sold.
Some of the residents led by the Chairman LC 2 Kigaaga parish in Mwizi Sub County Mr Turyaheebwa Francis explained that the outbreak has already affected their income especially in this period of 1st academic term 2020 when school fees is a task, loans still a burden to many, and food in their homes.
‘Even when you have money to buy meat, you can’t get a good bunch of matooke to cook,’ a woman said.
This disease has also been reported in districts like Ntungamo, and was reported in Isingiro about two months ago.
According to Mwesigwa Kyomukama Jotham a politician and farmer in Mwizi, this exposes how incompetent some government workers are because extension workers should have intervened by now.
Rwampara people considerably contribute to the banana market in western Uganda urban centres like Mbarara, plus the capital Kampala and other urban centres supplied by other banana producing districts including Isingiro,Bushenyi and others.
Authorities have not yet started sensitization on this issue yet they have been notified of this disaster.
