Relief as Court awards former Uganda Railway Corporation Staff with over 2 billion Shillings
The Court of Appeal has awarded 5104 former employees of the UGANDA Railways corporation 2.6 billion shillings as damages for wrongful termination of their contracts between the years 1986 and 2004.
The 5104 claimants who were working in different capacities as Civil Engineers, Traffic Staff, Managers and Accountants have each been awarded 500,000 shillings at a 17% interest from June 2004 till time full payment.
This after Court of Appeal concurred with the decision of retired High court Judge Okumu Wengi who first ruled that the said people are entitled to payment of their pension and damages, URC being dissatisfied appealed.
Now 3 Justices of the Appellate Court led by Deputy Cheif Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo delivered the ruling and ordered that the Corporation also pays them 2/3rds of the costs of this Appeal.
However, the Claimants will not receive terminal benefits under the pension’s Act because they were not public servants.
The ruling comes 14years after some claimants died, others visibly look frail in shape, while others have lost their families due to unemployment.
