Over 700 vendors using 2 toilets in Mbarara market
Uganda has today joined the rest of the world to celebrate World Toilet Day to raise awareness of the 2.4 billion people living without access to safely managed sanitation, worldwide.
This year’s day focuses on sustainable sanitation and climate change.
Vendors operating in Rwebikoona old market in Kamukuzi Mbarara north division have expressed worry over lack of enough and clean toilets.
Eliab Niwagasha, the vendors’ chairman said the market has between 700-1000 vendors but it has only two public toilets that are privately owned.
‘There are two toilets – for males and females, that’s not enough. We are planning and trying to ensure sanitation,’ Eliab added.
The second toilet is outside the market.
This market was founded in 1934 (86 yrs ago) and it is one of the public places in Mbarara city with poor sanitation.
