Over 500 Mbarara traders stranded after market closure
Rwebikoona old market traders in Kamukuzi division Mbarara municipality are stranded and decrying losses following the closure of their market by Mbarara Resident District Commissioner (RDC) James Mwesigye on April 10,2020 because they were not adhering to President Directives and guidelines to prevent covid_19.
Days to the conclusion of the 14-day lockdown and curfew which was yesterday extended for 21 days up to 5/5/2020, over 500 traders were sent home as authorities agree on whether to reopen the market or leave it closed and many have expressed worry and some have embarked on engaging authorities.
However, some traders who preferred anonymity say Mbarara RDC Lt Col James Mwesigye angrily closed the market after being humiliated by a market task force member who forced him to wash hands before accessing the market.
The Market Chairperson Mr. Niwagasha Eliab said he heard of the allegations but personally knew no scuffle that transpired. He asked government to reopen the market because traders are ready to adhere every directive and guideline.
