Mubende artisan miners accuse UPDF officers of torture
Mubende Artisan miners are crying foul after UPDF officers forcefully destroyed their assets and looted some of them.
The group of Artisan miners led by their chairperson Bukya John Bosco was appearing before the Natural resources committee chaired by Kiboga East MP Hon Keefa Kiwanuka to defend their petition against eviction from their mining areas that happened on August 4 2017.
Jacob Mutabazi Tusubira who is one of the victims of the UPDF officers’ actions during the eviction exercise, said that his land was taken, lodges and houses demolished and some were forcefully occupied by the army officers.
He stated that the Mineral Policy Commandant Jesca Kiyigomba at first wanted to negotiate for the renting of his houses and lodges but later chased him without pay.
The brutality by the army officers deployed in the mining areas in Mubende was also witnessed and tested by Bukuya county MP Hon. Dr.Micheal Bukenya .
Dr.Bukenya told the Committee investigating the alleged eviction and torture of Mubende miners that when he went to these mining areas as an area MP to assess the situation, he was roughed up and almost beaten up, with the army officers accusing him of not alerting them about his visit to the place.
He said that military and police officers deployed in these mining areas have no limit of what they are supposed to do.
The Artisan miners from Mubende, in a statement read before the committee by their secretary General Emmanuel Kibirige, still demanded for the investor to surrender at least 1square kilometer of the land out of 144 square kilometers the company owns in the Artisan miners area of operation.
