MPS Lash At Government on Return of LDUs
A section of members of parliament has lashed at government for the quick return of the officers of the local defense unit in the community.
This after the army announced that the Local Defence Forces will resume operations but they will no longer participate in day-time activities regarding enforcement of Covid-19 guidelines.
LDUs were directly in the enforcement of Covid-19 guidelines but they were later withdrawn after public outcry that they were abusing their power, especially following cases of shootings.
Dokolo south mp Felix Okot Ogong told journalists at parliament that government should assure the public on whether the bad elements in LDUs have been removed to avoid violation of the people’s rights caused by poor training of LDUs.
Gulu municipality county mp Leandro Komakeck said that the LDUs need to undergo the human rights basic training since they were trained through skills of the army to kill
Elgon county mp Wamakuyu mudimi questioned whether the deployed LDUs would observe discipline while on duty to avoid the repeat of past mistakes while in operation of keeping law and order.
