Mkapa to be laid to rest today
Former Tanzanian President Benjamin William Mkapa will be buried later today at his home village in Southern Tanzania after he died of a cardiac arrest last week.
Benjamin William Mkapa was a Tanzanian politician who served as the third President of Tanzania. He was in office for one decade from 1995 to 2005. He was Chairman of the Revolutionary State Political Party.
Some Tanzanians believe President Mkapa will be remembered as the founder of modern Tanzania, because of the long list of national institutions launched during his presidency – from the country’s revenue authority to the anti-corruption bureau.
After handing over the presidency to President Jakaya Kikwete in 2005, Mkapa went on to start a non-profit organisation which leads efforts to fight HIV/AIDS in the country.
Mkapa was born on 12th November, 1938 in Ndanda, Tanzania and the former president died on 24th July, 2020 in a Dar es Salaam hospital in Tanzania. He went to Kenyatta University Main Campus, Makerere University, Columbia University and Pugu Secondary School
Mkapa died of malaria and he had been struggling with the heart attack disease for quite some time.
Mkapa is survided by three Children.
