Mbarara councilor speaks out after being found with suspected stolen government property
Kisenyi ward councilor in Kakoba division Mbarara city, Hon. Muzamil Ssekajja has attributed theft allegations to political wrangles fueled by his opponents.
The former municipal works secretary is under investigation after suspected stolen government property including a street light, pavers and others were recovered from his home in Nyamityobora, Kakoba in an operation by police and city council authorities on Wednesday, July 22, 2020. ‘These are my enemies,’ Muzamir added.
The property believed to be part of that procured under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development-USMID project were recovered after Mbarara Resident District Commissioner’s office ordered for an investigation after receiving information from a whistleblower.
According to the Rwizi Region Police spokesperson Samson Kasasira, they secured a search warrant from court to search the councilor’s home and police have preferred charges of abuse of office, uttering false documents, and possession of government stores against him.
With the street light found already installed, Ssekaja says he bought the property from Abubaker Technical Services that was contracted to install street lights in Mbarara city.
Mbarara City Deputy Town Clerk, Richard Mugisha earlier revealed that he has never received any complaint from either their employees or public about missing property.
