A Teacher who last week pleaded guilty before Nabweru Magistrate Court to killing his wife Viola Kakai; a former nurse with IHK hospital, has been sentenced to 17 years imprisonment.
Chief Magistrate Patricia Amoko has sentenced 46 year old Simon Wanyakala for manslaughter which occurred on 1st / August/2020 at their home in Bbumbu Kitezi zone -Kasangati town council, where he unlawfully hit his wife on the head with an axe before their children.
The Couple has 3 children aged 12 , 10 and 3.
Evidence proved that on the fateful date, the accused heard the sound of a vehicle that dropped off his wife around 9pm and got angry.
It was the children who alarmed the community that rushed Kakai to hospital from where she was pronounced dead.
Days later, Wanyakala recorded a confession statement before a Grade One Magistrate at Buganda Road court admitting to have killed his wife in front of their children.
While sentencing Wanyakala, Magistrate Amoko noted that the offence of domestic violence is a rampant one that calls for stringent measures, especially in this case the weapon used; the body part that was targeted and the crime having been committed before children.
