Kayihura Cancels FDC Rukungiri Rally
Opposition Forum for Democratic Change [FDC], planned countrywide mobilization meetings scheduled to commence today ,as announced on Wednesday by the Party NEC, in Rukungiri district have been cancelled.
This is after Inspector General of Police Gen Kale Kayihura yesterday met with the FDC leadership to discuss their planned countrywide mobilization meetings.
During the meeting at Police Headquarters in Naguru, IGP Kale Kayihura raised concerns that their communication was insufficient since their letter did not amount to “notice” within the meaning of Section 5 of the Public Order Management Act.
However, FDC Chief mobilizer ,Ingrid Turinawe says the party officially communicated to Police about the said meetings as required by the law. She insists that they will proceed with their planned rallies irrespective of the police’s thoughts.
Ingrid says the exercise is aimed at identifying lower level candidates, rolling out party primary elections, recruitment and sale of party cards.
Earlier on Thursday, the Rukungiri District Police Commander ASP Wotwaali made a radio announcement making it clear that the opposition party meetings would by no means be permitted in the area.
He cautioned the public against turning up for the rally.
