Stakeholders, especially the business community around Mbarara city, have accused Mbarara city leadership of shoddy work and incompetence due to the poor state of Katete bridge and faulty Buremba road traffic lights.
Boda boda riders at Katete bridge stage and other road users expressed worry, calling upon the city authorities to intervene and renovate this bridge before lives are lost.
According to the city town clerk Mr. Tibihika Theophilus, the ‘weak’ bridge railings and barriers were, months ago knocked by a reckless driver who wasn’t arrested but the council is aware and awaiting money to work on the bridge.
‘There is money in the government account but we have to follow procedures. We are waiting for this quarter allocation,’ he told Crooze Fm.
Kagiiko Imam Shafi, the L C IV councilor representing Katete ward in Nyamitanga also accused the authorities of concealing the Bill of Quantities (BOQs) and other information about government projects, suspecting that this could be their tactic to swindle funds.
A refurbished Katete bridge was commissioned in 2018/19 amidst outcry from some leaders and activists who cited shoddy work. It has been repaired several times, costing about shs450 million.
Meanwhile, the city mayor Robert Kakyebezi said besides plans to repair the faulty traffic lights at Global High School along Kakoba road, the city engineer and other responsible departments are also considering Katete bridge as an emergency, all found in Mbarara city south.
The faulty traffic lights were erected under the World Bank supported project,Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) phase 2018/19/20/21.
