Illegal Construction in Mbarara Central Market Shocks Leaders.
Western Uganda – There is scandal of illegal construction that has been discovered within the ongoing Project of Mbarara Central Market in Mbarara town that has left leaders questioning how a small portion of land was left out and sold off.
Mbarara Central Market is under Uganda Support To Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) Projects 2013-2018,and it was allocated over Shs21 billion.
In February 2019, leaders found out that when ROKO constructors started constructing at Central Market, there is a piece of Land that was left out,this saga is still standing.
According to sources, that small Land that was left out it is now being developed illegally after several allegations that it has been sold off secretly to unknown tycoon, other claims have it clear that one of the municipal leaders owns this land.
Sources say that the land that was left out, it is now being developed by unknown people putting on some other Lock-ups. It is also alleged that they are four storied lock-ups that are planned to be constructed on that piece of Land. This Land is located in the corner of Central Market beside Market Square along Garage Street/Bishop Wills Street.
It is also said that businessmen, Nickolas Asiimwe (Nickoz) and Everest Begumisa from Rwampara have a hand in this deal.
Selected councilorsby the council to head an investigative committee to probe council lands,led by Asiimwe Ntengye, are still facing futile situation in establishing these mafias.
“That is a public land not a municipal council land, therefore let the Lands authorities Intervene,’’ Mayor Robert Kakyebezi commented.
Mbarara Municipality (now metropolitan city) received Shs41 billion under the first USMID phase 2013-2019, and it is now budgeting for Shs 83.6 billion for this phase two.
