Operation Entebbe or Operation Thunderbolt.
It was a successful counter-terrorist hostage-rescue mission carried out by commandos of the Israel Defense Forces at Entebbe Airport in Uganda on 4 July 1976 during Idi Amin’s regime.
Four people died in the operation including Yonatan “Yoni” Netanyahu (brother to current Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu), an Israel Defense Forces officer who commanded the elite commando unit Sayeret Matkal during Operation Thunderbolt. He died at the age of 30.
Mission was successful, 102 of 106 hostages rescued and a quarter of Uganda’s air force was destroyed.
