Government asked to weigh into continued blockage of Uganda dairy products in Kenya
The Mbarara Municipality MP, Michael Tusiime has called on the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of East African Affairs to weigh into the continued blockage of Uganda dairy products to access the Kenyan markets.
He said that the ban on the export of Ugandan dairy products has seen a tremendous decrease inn amounts of permits issued, which has greatly impacted on investments of dairy industry negatively.
Tusiime said that in 2019, Uganda earned USD130m from dairy products and said that the idea of regulating exporters goes against the spirit of free movements of goods as highlighted in the East African Common market and due to the ban, some factories have started closing shop and laying off staff.
In her ruling, Speaker Rebecca Kadaga castigated government for ignoring the matter saying it has been in public domain for several months but no government position has been issued.
She hence called on the Ministry of Trade to explain what they are going to do to unlock export of dairy products export in Kenya.
