Desert locusts, which have ravaged parts of Kenya and Somalia, have entered Uganda. According to State Minister for Karamoja Affairs Moses Kizige, the locusts entered the country through Abwalinga and Ngongosowon villages in Amudat Sub County, Amudat District.
On Monday, Desert locusts were in Nabilatuk through Nakapiripirit district,having entered Uganda through Amudat yesterday. Another swarm has been sighted in Nakabaat,Moroto district all in Northern Uganda.
While speaking on the thirty-ninth Anniversary of Tarehe Sita in Nakaseke district on Feb 6,2020,recently President Museveni said government will buy planes to fight against locusts.
This follows Parliament confirmation that Shs15 billion budget has been set aside as contingency to fight the spread of locusts.
Authorities have already swung into action.
Locusts last invaded Uganda 25 years ago.
Though edible, One locust can eat its weight in plants every day. A swarm of locusts can eat up to 400 million pounds of plants each day! Locusts can travel long distances, so they can cause major damage. They’ve been known to fly from Africa to England!
Due to massive destruction of crops, they cause famine.
The swarms spread into east Africa from Yemen across the Red Sea, after heavy rainfall in late 2019 created ideal conditions for the insects to flourish. Locusts can travel up to 150km (93 miles) in a day.
Locusts are a collection of certain species of short-horned grasshoppers in the family Acrididae that have a swarming phase. These insects are usually solitary, but under certain circumstances they become more abundant and change their behaviour and habits, becoming gregarious.
Common types/species are Desert,Migratory, Australian,Red,Rocky Mountain,American bird grasshopper locusts, and Patanga succinct(the Bombay locust).

Whereas environmentalists attribute locusts to environmental degradation, the bible sets it as a punishment as written in the story of Israelites.
According to the Biblical book of Exodus, a swarm of locusts was inflicted on Egypt as one of ten deadly plagues sent by God to persuade the Pharaoh to release the Hebrews from slavery. The plagues included a plague of frogs, darkness and boils as God punished Pharaoh; two more plagues were sent.
