Escalating Sex Business threatens southwestern Uganda
Authorities in southwestern Uganda especially urban centres including Mbarara,Isingiro,Ibanda,Rushere,Kabale,Kasese,Bushenyi, and others have intervened to eliminate the escalating Sex Business.
Mbarara district Deputy Resident District Commissioner (D/RDC) Emmy Kateera Turyabagyenyi has confirmed that RDC’s office along Police and Army are starting an operation because sex business is a great threat especially against health and security.
Police recently arrested over seven sex workers and those of Rwandan origin were deported but it is believed that they bounced back.

According to October – December 2019 investigations conducted by Aaron Ainomugisha https://twitter.com/AaronAinomugis3 ,besides sex workers who parade themselves on high street at night near Amahembe G’ente roundabout, others reside, and operate in slums of Katete,Kijungu,Nyamitanga,and others around Mbarara municipality.
In towns like Ntungamo (Mbarara-Rwanda road), lorry/truck drivers are most outstanding clients.
Charges range from Shs2000-7000 for short, long – 10,000 – 30,000, spending a night or more days at your place is over 50,000 and majority can’t allow you without a condom.
‘The Lodge here is Sh2000, I can’t spend a night at your home because I have children to take care of, how can I spend a night at someone’s house yet I have children. Responsibility is mine.’ one told our journalist who disguised as a client at High Street Mbarara around 10 minutes to 1am.
Some sex workers come from Rwanda,Tanzania, and other countries neighboring Uganda who join Aunties to train young girls before bringing them to high street. The training is done in areas of Kijungu,Kisenyi,and Ruti Mbarara municipality.
For areas outside Mbarara, activists and authorities have continued to decry and continue to ensure elimination of sexual immorality acts.
