Elephantiasis awareness starts in Kamwenge
A meeting on the management of elephantiasis in Uganda has been held in Kamwenge district with an aim of raising awareness and initiating prevention and treatment of the disease.
The meeting was organized by the Ministry of Health in partnership with Foot Work – a US based organization working on the elimination of elephantiasis in the world and International Orthodox Christian Charities from Ethiopia.
While opening the meeting at Cape Hotel in Kamwenge town today, Dr Edridah Muheki Tukahebwa, the Assistant Commissioner Health Services for Vector Control, said after realizing the complexity of the problem they sought the intervention of those handled a similar problem in Ethiopia.
Sylvia Bahereira the Assistant District Health Officer Kamwenge said the initiative is a relief to the victims who had lost hope.
The three day meeting will involve the visitation of Busiriba Sub County, one of the most affected areas in Kamwenge and is attended by participants from the districts of Kwen, Manafwa, Kibale, Kabarole and Ibanda.
