Defilement and Early marriages on increase in Mbarara district.
Western Uganda – The escalating cases of school dropout;most especially females have been attributed to an increase in defilement and early marriages in the district.
The district education officer, Mr. Gabriel Ahimbisibwe has
revealed that these have become a challenge in the
district and some parents forcefully marry off their young girls with intentions of getting property.
He however expressed hope to have this brought to an end since operations and sensitization are under way to arrest this. He calls upon all stakeholders to unite, fight and end the vices.
The habit is mostly practiced in Mwizi sub county in Rwampara county where some girls who became mothers at the age of 16 and by the time they reach 46, they have unmanageable number of children in the family.
He says it’s not only defilement that is contributing to
school dropout but there are other challenges like absenteeism where
Rubaya sub county in Kashari south county tops by registering over forty
pupils per day in the school.
