Brutalized by Soldiers: Reuters Journalist Akena sues Ugandan government.
James Akena,a photojournalist with a London based but international news agency,Reuters, who was severally beaten by soldiers during the protest against the detention of Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine last year, has dragged government to Court for recovery of over Shs100 million;Confiscated hard cash, camera equipment, damaged property, cost of treatment and medical bills, Transport to and from Hospital, and loss of earnings from failure to work.
Through AF Mpanga Advocates, Akena also wants the High court in Kampala to order Government to compensate him in damages for the injuries, pain and embarrassment caused to him by the servants of the UPDF or other lawfully established security organs of the Government of Uganda.
He further wants a public apology to be made by the Attorney General of Government and his agents who assaulted and battered him, plus costs he is going to incur in prosecuting this suit.
The incident happened on 20th August 2018 in down town Kampala City’s Kiseka Market.
Akena says it has taken him a full year to file this suit, after the case he filed with the Central Police Station, upon his release, has never been investigated since it was reported.
