Agriculture sector grew by 4.2 percent up from 3.8 percent
In the budget speech by the minister of finance Matia Kasaija, Agriculture sector being the back born of the country, it grew by 4.2 percent up from 3.8 percent in the previous four years and the Industry grew by only 2.3 percent compared to an annual average of 7 percent in the previous four years.
Minister noted that access to safe water in urban areas has increased to 79%, with a total connection of 720,000 clients. 66,000 new customers were connected to safe water in urban areas last year.
Kasaija said that the road network has been expanded to hit the 5600km in 2019 and Entebbe International Airport has been renovated as well.
He says that Karuma Hydro power plant is 98% complete and prior date of commissioning was extended from December 2019 to December 2020 in order to complete the interconnection bridge.
In next financial year budget that is to be effected on 1st July this year, Works and Transport takes Shs 5.6 trillion (16%) ,Security Shs 4.5 trillion (9%),Interest Payment Shs 4 trillion (8%) ,Education Shs 3.6 trillion (8.3%) , Health Shs 2.7 trillion (6.4%)
Government is to borrow 11 trillion shillings, External debt repayment at 1.2 trillion shillings, domestic refinancing at 7.5Tn, and Domestic arrears at 40bn.
Minister kasaija said that in the next financial year Uganda’s vulnerable population will receive protection from Government through continued provision of relief aid especially during this period of COVID-19 PANDAMIC.
Kasaija said that government in the next financial year will focus on fighting corruption through undertaking a number of measures.
