A Health Center in Ntungamo has been non-functional for more than six years
The Ntungamo District Woman Member of Parliament Beatrice Rwakimaari has challenged government to equip all Health Centre IIs as the only way of reducing health related issues at grass root level.
She made remarks over the weekend while opening Kiziba Health Centre II in Kiziba ward Nyakyera Town council which has been non-functional for more than six years since its construction due to government policy of phasing out HCIIs in order to upgrade HCIIIs in the country.
Rwakimaari notes that health related challenges like infant and maternity rates would remain high in the country if the government does not come out to lift a ban on the operationalization of all health centre IIs saying that most people travel long distances to access health centre IIIs.
She adds that in order to reduce congestion on health centre IIIs, there is need to revive the lower health units.
According to Hon Rwakimaari who is also a member of the parliamentary Health committee, drug resistance and non adherence could have been prevented if first aid treatment had been available at parish level before referring people to a bigger hospital.
Located in a hilly area, the facility was built in the 2014/2015 financial year and will serve villages of Bituntu, Kinengo, Kyaruhaya, Kayanga among others who have been trekking many miles to Nyakyeera HCIII for health services.
Hon Rwakimaari asked leaders at all levels to cooperate and be supportive in order to utilize every opportunity from the government instead of engaging selfish politics.
She told them that MPs are like cooks who toil to cook wonderful food but local leaders are there ones to serve the people and that if the chain breaks in the middle, service delivery will also collapse.
Rwakimari assured the people Kiziba and neighboring communities that she will facilitate health workers who will be staying at the health facility until the government recruits the permanent one.
The newly constructed health centre is being manned by health workers from Nyakyera HCIII and community nurses.
The Nyakyera sub county and town council chairperson Nganwa Kenneth Rubatuhuura said that good health is vital to enable people realize their dreams saying that it was very difficult for the community especially expectant mothers to seek medical at Nyakyera health III.
Kiziba Health Centre II will have a midwife on every Tuesday and other days for general out patients.
