130 million people to face starvation
The United Nations (UN) Secretary General, Antonio Guterres has expressed concern over the situation caused by COVID-19 pandemic especially intensified food insecurity.
In his World Food Day message published by UN News yesterday October 16, 2020, he said some 130 million people risk being pushed to the brink of starvation by the end of this year.
This is in addition to the 690 m people who already lack enough to eat and more than 3bn people cannot afford a healthy diet.
Guterres says without zero tolerance to hunger, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) cannot be achieved.
This year’s #WorldFoodDay marked the 75th Anniversary of the founding of Food and Agriculture Organization-FAO, with a view to looking towards the future we need to build together and the theme was “Grow, nourish, sustain. Together. Our actions are our future.”
