Worry As Youth Beat Adults In Spreading HIV/AIDS
Medical reports from Karambi Action for Life Improvement (KALI), an NGO operating in the districts of Kasese and Kamwenge, has indicated that HIV prevalence in adolescents is four times more than that of adults.
Molly Muserero, an officer from KALI, under its human rights and good governance project, revealed this in an interview stating, that the rate at which young girls are being involved in sexual activities was worrying. “The high prevalence of HIV/AIDS among adolescents is as a result of young girls engaging in sex with older men,” she stated.
Muserero added: “60% of the diseases that occur every year in young people are sexually transmitted diseases like syphilis, gonorrhoea and other female genital related diseases.”
She further observed that majority of the pregnancies are attributed to teenagers adding, that the maternal mortality ratio in young girls is very high.
Muserero, however, singled out some of the most affected areas in Kasese district to be the commercial places and the fishing communities that constitute of various tribes.
The Kasese District deputy Speaker, Ms. Asiimwe Jane Muhindo, also noted that there is multiple sex and bad peer groups associated with teenagers hence fuelling the rise of HIV/AIDS in Kasese.
She also said that the moral behaviours of teenagers in the society were deteriorating adding, that the parents were reluctant in playing their responsible roles to their off springs. Jane called for collective responsibility among all stakeholders in Kasese district in reversing the rate at which the epidemic is standing at in Kasese district.
She encouraged the young generation to observe the ABC method if they are to realize their future goals.
