Wigan chairman Dave Whelan powerless to stop Callum McManaman and James McCarthy joining Roberto Martinez at Everton
Toffees target: Callum McManaman could join Martinez at Everton
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan insists he will not stand in the way of the likes of Callum McManaman and James McCarthy following Roberto Martinez to Everton.
Martinez is expected to be confirmed as David Moyes’ successor at Goodison Park today, after the clubs settled on a compensation figure thought to be in the region of £1.5million.
The Spaniard will immediately look to put his own stamp on the playing squad and has already been linked with potential moves for the highly-rated winger McManaman, who was released by Everton as a youngster, midfielder McCarthy as well as striker Arouna Kone.
With Wigan relegated to the Championship, Whelan admits he will be powerless to stop any of his star players following their old boss to Merseyside.
‘If Everton want to sign any of our players for the right amount of money we will consider it,’ he said.
‘We have to face every single thing that relegation presents us.
‘It is normally the case certain players want to play in the Premier League and I can’t blame them for that.
‘Players sign contracts but sometimes one or two want to leave and it is difficult to stop them. Players are players and I believe in freedom in football.
‘But we have a lot of players who are loyal to Wigan Athletic so we will just wait and see.’
