Universities Support Staff Maintain Strike
A strike by the support staff at Uganda’s public universities enters yet another day after Planning Minister David Bahati tried in vain to convince the staff to return to work.
The meeting yesterday had brought together officials from Finance, Education and Public Service ministries on one side and the representatives of the staff on the other.
The ministry officials made an offer of 17% salary increment for all support staff hoping that this would convince the staff to return to work as they wait for conclusive negotiations on their fair salary enhancement demands.
According to Musa Okello, the general secretary for National Union of Education Institutions -NUEI Makerere Chapter, the meeting held with Minister David Bahati yielded nothing as the staff were told that government was insisting on payment using the 2017/2018 circular.
