Teachers Ask Government to re-introduce Canning In Schools
Teachers in Soroti district have asked government to reinstate the caning of learners at school in order to shape discipline which is key in enhancing academic performance.
Teachers lamented that the lack of caning of learners in schools is heavily affecting academic performance.
Government in 2016 signed the Children Act (Amendment) Bill 2015 into law which among other key issues abolishes beating children at school.
Breaking this law attracts imprisonment not exceeding 3 years or a fine not exceeding 2 million shillings or both.
And through this law, the ministry of education was also quick to note that a teacher found beating up children in school risks losing his or her qualification.
However, Hebert Ariko the MP Soroti Municipality said that much as government policy now stands against corporal punishment, allowing teachers to ‘use the rod would help better discipline and spar academic performance.
