Rakai Farmers Cry for Gov’t help after Hippos destroyed their gardens
More than 500 farmers in Rakai district are counting losses following the destruction of their plantations by hippotamuses. The affected farmers are mainly those living around the shores of Lakes Kijjanibarola, Kacheera and Lake Mburo National Park. The Hippos have destroyed beans, maize, sweet potatoes and among others.
Ronald Byakatonda, one of the affected sweet potato growers in Byembogo village, Dwaniro sub-county, says despite continuous outcry to government, they have never been compensated for the losses.
Amos Mandela, the Buyamba County Member of Parliament wants a law on wildlife amended to compensate the affected people.
