Prof Bukenya makes U-turn, pledges support for Museveni come 2016
Former vice president, Prof Gilbert Bukenya has pledged to support President Yoweri Museveni in the 2016 general elections claiming he has been frustrated by the opposition.
Bukenya who fell out with Museveni since getting sacked from cabinet in 2011, now castigates The Democratic Alliance (TDA), a coalition of opposition political parties and pressure groups, of being full of greedy and self-centered people whom he cannot associate with.
“TDA was poisoned and people who are there are very greedy. President Museveni has the right qualifications to lead this country,” said Prof Bukenya in what many have seen as a surprise, especially after he declared his intentions to stand against his former boss (Museveni) shortly after he was dropped as vice president in May 2011.
He made the statements while meeting a group of his supporters on Friday at his Kakiri home in Wakiso district.
Bukenya claims he has met president Museveni at least four times in recent weeks but was non-committal on whether he will return to the ruling NRM party.
He also announced he would be defending his Busiro North parliamentary seat in the next election and stand for President in the 2021 elections.
