Police Officers Who Produce Children Without Planning Will Be Arrested
Police officers who produce children without planning for them will be arrested and prosecuted, Ms. Christine Agwang, The Child and Family Protection Officer attached to the police headquarters in Kampala has said.
While in a tour of Tororo police barracks after the headquarters had been tipped that many policemen in Tororo had many children whom they were struggling to feed, Agwang accused police officers of being heavily indebted to the extent that they had nothing for their families.
“You produce many children that you fail to provide and to make matter worse, you are servicing many loans. Much of your salary is spent on servicing loans and almost nothing remains in your accounts. How do you expect to take care of many children with this behaviour?” Agwang said.
She also added that if the police men failed to provide necessities for their children, they would arrest and arraign such culprits before court.
“Once you get to court you will be compelled to pay money for the children’s up keep’’ Agwang went on.
She also warned the police against child labor in form of employment of children within the police barrack as house maids saying the long arm of the law would not spare them.
The police officers however said that their failure to take care of their families emanated from the inconsistent payment of salaries. They also said that they were poorly housed and needed houses for their children.
The Welfare Officer Of the Ugandan Police Force, Dr. Zirimu Murisa however said that government was bent towards improving the welfare status of policemen in the whole country.
“Under the Public Private Partnership [PPP] arrangement between the Uganda police force with other local and international investors, we will put up structures. Police officers will soon acquire modern accommodation across the country,” Murisa said. He also added that salary anomalies and irregular payments would be rectified.
