Panel to Hear Age Limit Case Named
The Panel to hear the Age Limit Petition at Mbale High court has been named.
Deputy Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny Ddolo, listed Justices Remmy Kasule, Kenneth Kakuru, Elizabeth Musoke and Cheborion Barishaki as the ones he is going to work with.
The date has however been changed from 4th.April to 9th.April which is agreable to all the Justices.
The DCJ also consulted the Chief Justice on the Petitioner’s claim that hearing of the said petition from Mbale instead of Kampala is a breach of the law, is baseless because in deciding this venue the DCJ acted within the Law.
That the DCJ who was part of the framers of the 1995 Constitution, cannot be the one to contribute to the abuse of the due process.
The Deputy Chief Justice and head of the Constitutional court is currently meeting the lawyers in this case to see how prepared they are ahead of the main hearing on 9th/April.
In January this year Opposition Members of Parliament led by their Leader Winfred Kiiza, and the Uganda Law Society, filed petitions in the Constitutional Court challenging the newly enacted “Age Limit” law.
The aggrieved parties say they do not agree with the whole process of conceptualizing, tabling, consultation , debating and passing of the age-limit bill in parliament on December 20, 2017 which did not put into consideration Civil liberties of Ugandans.
They want it nullified.
