Over 200 drown in a Nile ferry accident
Over 200 civilians, including women and children, in South Sudan drowned in a Nile ferry accident on Sunday while fleeing fighting in Malakal town , army spokesman,Mr. Philip Aguer has comfirmed. According to Mr Aguer, the boat was overloaded.
Malakal is located on the banks of the White Nile , north of its confluence with River Sobat.The town is the gateway to the oilfields of the Upper Nile region and the town has seen fighting in recent days.
More than 1,000 people have died and close to 355,000 have been displaced by the fighting, which began on 15 December, between the South Sudanese government and rebel forces , according to the UN.
Talks aimed at securing a ceasefire in the month-long conflict are ongoing in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
