Old foes Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola to renew hostilities when Chelsea clash with Bayern Munich for Super Cup
Back in the fold: Jose Mourinho will be unveiled as the new Chelsea manager on Monday
Jose Mourinho will go head-to-head with arch-rival Pep Guardiola when he attempts to win his first piece of silverware in his second stint as Chelsea manager.
Former Real Madrid boss Mourinho will lead the Europa League winners into battle for the Super Cup in Prague on August 30 when their opponents will be new Champions League kings Bayern Munich, who will soon officially appoint ex-Barcelona boss Guardiola as their head coach.
The two men were mortal enemies when they battled for supremacy in La Liga and often clashed as tempers boiled over.
The evident dislike between the two managers added extra spice to El Clasico confrontations with Mourinho famously commenting: ‘Up until now we’ve had two groups of coaches.
‘[There’s] a very small group who didn’t talk about referees. Then there’s a larger group, of which I’m included, of coaches that criticise referees when they make big mistakes.
‘And with Pep’s statements we’ve come to a third group, which is a one person group, who criticises good decisions made by the referee. I’ve never seen this before.’
Guardiola hit back with an expletive-laden responde saying: ‘In the [press room], he’s the f*****g chief, the f*****g man, the person who knows everything about the world and I don’t want to compete with him at all.
It’s a type of game I’m not going to play because I don’t know how.’
Both bosses will be competing to buy the world’s top players in the summer as they seek to gain an edge over each other on the way to Champions League glory next May and renewing rivalries in Prague means the Super Cup will gain more attention than ever before.
