MPs give President Kenyatta ultimatum to cancel new Kenya-Uganda sugar deal
Six Kenyan MPs have given President Uhuru Kenyatta seven days to cancel the new Kenya-Uganda sugar importation deal or else they lead a campaign to destroy cheap sugar imports.
The legislators from Western and Nyanza regions say the cheap imports will kill the local industry, which is already on its knees.
The deal, struck during a three-day state visit by Mr Kenyatta to Uganda has also sparked reaction from the top opposition figure Raila Odinga who called it ‘tasteless and sour’.
While many of its opponents say it is unfair to the local brands but Mr Kenyatta insists importing sugar from Uganda to solve his country’s deficit is cheaper.
