Maria Sharapova & Venus Williams forced to pull out of the Cincinnati Open
The American was due to face Ana Ivanovic in the second round of the competition, but her opponent advances to round three without striking a ball.
The world number two had been out of action since Wimbledon due to concerns over a problem in her right leg, and she had delayed a return for another week after initially planning to play in the Rogers Cup.
However, Sharapova has decided against taking any risks with her fitness as he looks ahead to the US Open.
Lucky loser Mirjana Lucic-Baroni will take Sharapova’s spot in the draw.
