Local authorities accuse Mbarara police of mishandling their cases
Local leaders in Mbarara district are blaming the police of mishandling their cases which has increased the rate of crime in the area.
Charles Tukamuhabwa, the chairperson local council one, Nyarubanga ward in Kakiika division, Mbarara municipality disclosed that people are shunning to report cases to police because they fear to lose their property in the name of exhibits.
He says police also receive bribes from culprits to release them, therefore, people have lost trust in police and criminals are taking advantage to terrorize people.
Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi region police spokesperson, has, however, defended the police saying the allegations are not true because the police’s mandate is to protect people and their property.
Kasasira has, meanwhile, advised residents and the local authorities to always cooperate with police and in case they cite any connivance between police and the criminals, they should approach police standards unit, the district police commander or the regional police officers for assistance.
