Liverpool poised to solve striker shortage with transfer of Celta Vigo’s Iago Aspas
Solution: Celta’s forward Iago Aspas is expected to join Liverpool
Liverpool are ready to ease a potential striker shortgae next season by pushing ahead with the of signing Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas for around £8million.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers has acted swiftly to reinforce his frontline after fears grew Daniel Sturridge will miss the start of the new Premier League campaign with an ankle injury, while Luis Suarez has announced he wants to quit the club.
The Uruguay international feels he has not been supported by the Anfield hierarchy during attacks from the media over his controversial on-field behaviour.
Real Madrid have been linked with a move for the 26-year-old former Ajax player but contrary to some reports there is no £40million release clause in his contract.
‘I’ve spoken to my agent, but there’s nothing concrete,’ said Suarez. ‘But to say no to Madrid will always be difficult.
‘I have a contract at Liverpool and there are always a lot of rumours in the transfer window. You never know until you see the offers available.’
Matters have been worsened by fears Sturridge could be sidelined for the first two months of the new season after he picked up a severe ankle injury while playing for England in last week’s international friendly with the Republic of Ireland.
Andy Carroll’s Anfield exit will also be confirmed this week, after he accepted he has no future in Rodgers’ plans, with a permanent deal with West Ham likely to be thrashed out.
Aspas, 25, is expected to travel to Merseyside this week to undergo a medical before completing his move from the Spanish club.
He can operate as the spearhead of the attack or play out wide in a 4-3-3 formation, possibly switching roles with Sturridge when the former Chelsea player returns to fitness.
Aspas scored 12 goals this season and also attracted interest from Swansea City, who wanted him to strengthen their squad for their assault on the Europa League when the new campaign kicks off in August.
