Kigezi High School Students Burn Dormitory Over Expelled Lovers
Gun fire rocked Kigezi High School on Monday night after students set a dormitory ablaze in protest of the school administration’s decision to expel fellow students. The strike began at around 10pm and lasted two hours before police came in and managed to disperse the students with bullets and teargas.The students went on rampage demanding that the school administration calls back the two students, a Senior Three boy and a Senior Six girl who were said to be lovers.
The school rules prohibit amorous relations amongst students.In the dead of the night on Monday, the angry students went on rampage and broke glass windows and hurled rocks at the administration block.
Later on, they moved to the prefects’ dormitory commonly known as the White House which was closed and set it ablaze.Some prefects were inside the dormitory when in caught fire but they all escaped unhurt. All their belongings however, went up in flames.Reports from the school also indicate that the students were unhappy with the school’s failure to procure a school bus, yet they have been contributing money for the last 5 years to procure one.
Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, during his recent visit to the school together with Vietnamese consular in Uganda, Caesar Augustine Mulenga, gave the school 20 million shillings as contribution to the purchase of the school bus.
Kigezi High School head teacher Stephen Mugume could not be reached for a comment as journalists were barred from entering the school, and he declined to pick calls.Elly Maate the Kigezi regional police spokesman says that when the students went on rampage, police was called and they managed to quell the situation and that calm was restored by morning to allow senior four students commence their national exams.
