Kawempe mosque ownership row solved
- Uganda Muslim Supreme Council-UMSC has struck a compromise with the warring parties over the ownership and management of Kawempe mosque. The disputed Mosque was started by the late Sheikh Swaibu Ssemakula, the first Mufti of Uganda in the mid 1920’s. Ssemakula’s family has been feuding with Muslims over the ownership and management of the Mosque, Kawempe Muslim Primary school and playground, which are found in Kawempe off the Kampala-Gulu Highway.
The seven acre piece of land hosting the Mosque, School and playground were donated to the late Ssemakula by Sultan Ahmed for the establishment of a mosque and school. The dispute between Ssemakula’s family and Muslims prompted UMSC to intervene and mediate between the warring parties.
