Over 18,000 Crime Preventers are set to be passed out on Tuesday in Kasese district at a function expected to be presided over by President Yoweri Museveni at Nyakasanga play ground in Kasese town.
The Acting Commissioner of Police, Hadija Namutebi, who is in-charge of Community Policing, said this was in fulfillment of the new Community Policing Concept that was launched by the president on October 3rd 2014 at Kololo National Celebrations ground in Kampala.
Namutebi told the press at the Kasese District Central Police station on Sunday that under the Concept, each district in the country is required to recruit 30 Crime preventers in every village.
According to Namutebi, the Crime preventers have been equipped with skills to detect Crime in their various villages in the country and also given knowledge on how to benefit from the government livelihood programme through the National Crime Forum Command. She adds that government has plans to train more civilians in self defense tactics.
The National Coordinator for the Crime Preventers Forum, Enos Agaba, strongly dismissed speculations that the Crime Preventers had been trained for elections. He said that under the programme, Crime Preventers’ Clubs were going to be established in Schools and Universities in the entire country.
About the benefits of the programme, Agaba said that so far, at least 500 Traffic Police officers from various parts of the country had been nabbed over corruption allegations.
