Kabale School Fire Kills Pupil
Fire has gutted Kabale Universal Nursery and Primary School in Kekubo in Central Division of Kabale municipality claiming the life of Adrine Arinda, a primary seven pupil.
The fire broke out at 07:30pm yesterday evening destroying the girl’s dormitory, administration block and property worth millions of Shillings including pupil’s property, furniture, beddings, office documents and computers.
Two teachers who were on night duty attribute the fire outbreak on a short circuit. They claim most of the pupils ran for dear life as they were preparing to go for night preps when the fire started. Arinda was lying in bed ill and couldn’t run to safety.
The Police fire team rushed to the school to contain the fire from spreading to other buildings but ran out of water. The fire tender had to rush to National Water and Sewerage Corporation to fetch more water.
The Kabale Municipality John Byabagambi Principal Education Officer describes the incident as unfortunate and blames the school administration for installing burglar proof windows in the dormitories, which hampered rescue efforts.
The Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson Ely Maate says Arinda succumbed to burns minutes after being rushed to at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital.
He says they have commenced investigations to ascertain the cause of the fire outbreak. The School Director, Drake Kisheija couldn’t be reached for comment by the time of filing this story as he was away from the school.
