Jailed Senior Police Officers Petition Attorney General Over Orders
Defence lawyers representing 7 police officers charged with kidnap of Rwandese nationals have petitioned the Attorney General William Byaruhanga, to intervene in the conduct of proceedings against their clients, before the General Court Martial in Makindye.
This after Court Chair Lt . Gen Andrew Gutti refused to honour orders contained in a ruling of Highcourt Judge Margret Oguli-Oumo, that directed for the release of the police officers whose trial she also declared as illegal and unlawful .
However despite reciept of this ruling , the Army court went a head to cancel the bail it had granted to 3 junior officers, and remanded the entire team of 7 officers to Makindye Millitary police barracks until today.
Defence lawyer Caleb Alaka informed court that he was compelled to seek a meeting with the Attorney General, for a clear explanation and interpretation of the Highcourt ruling.
The jailed police officers include ; the former commandant of the Special Operations Unit Nixon Agasirwe ,Joel Aguma , Benon Atwebembeirwe, Abel Tumukunde Fisal Katende , Kwarisima Amon and James Magada.
The Army court has further sent them back on remand until the 8th/May 2018 as inquiries into their case continue.
