Inter Religious Council Backs Regulation of Religious Broadcast
- The Inter Religious Council of Uganda-ICRU has supported the move by Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) to regulate religious programming. Recently, UCC issued a set of guidelines aimed at streamlining religious programs carried on various radio and television stations in the country.
The regulations bar stations belonging to one group from airing content that undermines the religious views and beliefs of those belonging to a different religious persuasion. Joshua Kitakule, the Secretary General of the Inter Religious Council of Uganda has welcomed the regulations, saying they will compel religious based radio and television stations especially those owned by born again churches to stop acting as a medium for attacking other religions.
Dr. William Tayeebwa, the head of the department of Journalism and Communication Makerere University, says he supports the move by the regulator to set broadcasting standards for religious programmes.
