High crime rate rocks Western Uganda’s biggest commercial centre, two people netted as operations continue.
Residents of different divisions in Mbarara municipality, western Uganda’s biggest commercial centre are living in fear due to increased crimes around the municipality, prompting authorities to launch operations aimed at curbing down crimes especially robbery and murders at night.
Comprised of Biharwe, Kakoba, Nyakayojo, Nyamitanga, Kamukuzi and Kakiika divisions, Mbarara municipality is set to become a city before the end of this year but crime rate is escalating in Kamukuzi and Kakoba which are town centres.
Recently, unknown assailants attacked and killed Ankunda Makdon,27 in his room in Kakoba before running away with his property, leaving a knife next to his body and Police responded by mounting an operation where suspects identified as Twikirize Edwin & Nasasira Godwin, all from Kisenyi in Kakoba division were arrested with machetes. This scenario followed an attack by machete wielding men who hurt a one Ochan Banard, a chef at Nicos Lounge in Mbarara town, left him with serious injuries on the arm & head last month.
According to the Mbarara district deputy district resident commissioner Mr Emmy Kateera, business people and boda boda riders are at the highest risk but criminals won’t be tolerated, RDC’s office is working with police and village leaders to arrest the situation through operations and registration of current and incoming residents in all wards.
