Frank Lampard insists Ashley Cole deserving of England captaincy
Ashley Cole will lead England against the Republic of Ireland at Wembley
Ashley Cole will be handed the England captain’s armband tonight seven months after being fined £90,000 for branding the Football Association a ‘bunch of t***s’ on Twitter.
Though Cole has since apologised for his outburst, which was triggered by an independent regulatory commission casting doubt on the evidence he gave to the John Terry racial abuse case, it brought further negative publicity to a player who collected his 100th cap against Brazil in February.
The decision to make him captain caused controversy and confusion with Cole being excused any of the usual pre-match media duties.
However, England vice-captain Frank Lampard insists the honour is well deserved.
Lampard said: ‘He [Cole] very much deserves it, not only because he’s won 100 caps but because of the way he performed over those 100 caps; he’s been the most consistent left-back in football for such a long period of time.
‘It’s the perfect gesture.’
