Former diplomat charged with defilement in Arua
Arua Court will next Tuesday rule on whether to grant bail to the former NRM district party registrar for Arua.
Dan Opima, Uganda’s former ambassador to Belgium and Ethiopia, was committed to the High court on July 31 by the chief magistrate Arua, Jessy Byaruhanga, after being charged with aggravated defilement.
The case involves a 13-year-old primary six pupil of Arua Demonstration primary school.
Opima appeared before Arua resident judge Vincent Okwanga on Wednesday.
His lawyer, Jimmy Madira, said Opima was of advanced age, and had ill health. However, prosecution led by Harriet Adubango said opima should not be granted bail on grounds that he would interfere with investigations.
