Fish traders decry harassment by Army officers
Uganda Fish Maws Traders Association has demanded government to halt the operation of the Army officers under the commander fisheries protection force whom they accuse of torturing fishermen and stealing their fish products.
While presenting their petition to the Speaker of parliament, the secretary of the Uganda Fish maws Traders Association, Charles Tebandeke said many of their colleagues have been tortured and beaten severely by the people who are supposed to protect them and their fish maws confiscated.
The petition recommend that the speaker summons the relevant officials to explain circumstances under which fishermen dealing in small scale fish maws and fishing industry are continuously being driven away from the business under unclear circumstances after issuance of licenses
Meanwhile, the speaker of parliament Rebecca Kadaga promised to cause a meeting between the president and affected fishermen and find a solution to the problems affecting the fishing community.
