Eight districts miss government university scholarships
. At least 8 districts have not sent any student to the five public universities on the government sponsorship scheme, according to a list released by Public Universities Joint Admissions Board this week.
An analysis shows that out of 114 districts listed, Kotido, Nakapiripirit, Kaabong, Ntoroko, Moroto, Otuke, Napak and Amudat have no student selected from any of their schools.
The central region continued its traditional dominance in admission with Kampala District leading the list with 320 students followed by Wakiso which has registered 300 candidates and Mukono posting 107. The list covers only direct, merit-based admissions, meaning that the districts still have a chance when admissions of the affirmative action, district quota-based system are considered.
The system provides an extra 896 slots to either Makerere, Kyambogo, Busitema, Gulu, or Mbarara University of Science and Technology. Mr Patrick Bitature, an entrepreneur, yesterday said there must be a system to ensure that all people in the different regions have access to government resources.
