Court Dismisses Sim-card Registration Application
High court Justice ,Steven Musota has dismissed an application for a temporary Injunction filed by Norman Tumuhimbise and a Human rights Watchdog; Trumpet Ug Ltd seeking to block Uganda communications commission(UCC)from switching off all unregistered Mobile phone users ,tomorrow until the main case is heard and disposed off.
Justice Musota reasoned that the said application is overtaken by events since it was filed long before government extended the sim-card registration deadline to tomorrow. He therefore ordered lawyers for both parties who were led by Edwin Karugire and the applicants’ lawyer, Eron Kiiza to file written submissions on the remaining issue of only recognizing the National ID as the official document for this exercise.
Justice Musota said he will deliver judgment on the matter on the 8th/June 2017.
However, Activist Tumuhimbise, has said that they oppose the behaviour and the manner in which their case was handled by the presiding judge. He noted that they are referring the matter to the Principal Judge for redress.
Abdu Salam Waiswa, the head of legal department at UCC welcomed the ruling saying the one-month given to people as an extension was enough for every Ugandan to secure a national identity card.
