Butebo By-election: DP, EC Clash Over Museveni Trip
Tempers are flaring in Butebo by-election as President Yoweri Museveni prepares to visit the area on Tuesday to campaign for the NRM candidate.
Democratic Party (DP) President, Norbert Mao today said they were under fire from the Electoral Commission to make changes to their campaign programme to accommodate Museveni’s trip.
“We are facing pressure from the Electoral Commission in Butebo County to amend our parliamentary candidate’s program today because Museveni will reportedly be in the same sub-county where we are campaigning today,” said Mao.
“We refuse to be intimidated and we shall proceed with the campaign program as agreed by the candidates and the EC,” added Mao.
“It is a campaign. Museveni will be there not as Head of State but as a party leader. I will also be there as party leader. We urge the EC to exercise impartiality and to stop being pushed around like a wheelbarrow.”
Other contestants seeking to occupy the vacuum left by departed Disaster Preparedness Minister Stephen Mallinga are FDC’s Samuel Khalwa, DP’s Zaidi Ziwa, NRM’s Patrick Mutono Lodoi.
Independent aspirants are Elisabeth Aisu, Kachio Eria, Richard Oseku and Sajjabi Yothia.
Museveni last visited the area in April during the burial of Mallinga.
